Nelson Mandela was a South-African anti-apartheid activist who served as the first President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. 

Nelson Mandela's government in the country focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by fostering racial reconciliation.  

Mandela, an African nationalist and socialist, served as the President of the African National Congress Party from 1991 to 1997.  

In 2009, United Nations officially declared to celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day on July 18 through a resolution in the General Assembly.

Nelson Mandela's full name is Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. He was a Black nationalist and the first Black president of South Africa.

In 1993, he and de Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace.  

In the early 1990s, his negotiations with South African President F.W. de Klerk helped end the apartheid system of racial segregation in the country and ushered in a peaceful transition to majority rule.
