Launched in 1944, the Golden Globes recognize achievements in motion pictures and television. Golden Globes nominations and awards are determined by an independent body of international journalist voters. By contrast, Academy membership is limited to film artists working in the production of theatrically-released motion pictures across 19 branches, ranging from Actors to Writers, plus the Artist Representatives category.

Comparing golden globes vs oscars rulebooks explains why nomination lists, category placements, and winners diverge across the awards calendar, a topic covered across our Awards Season guides.

Voting Bodies and Governance: International Journalists vs. Academy Branches

To be eligible to apply as a Golden Globe voter, an applicant must be an experienced international entertainment journalist working for a recognized international media organization and may reside in the U.S. or overseas. Personal blogs, social media profiles, and review sites do not qualify for Golden Globe voter eligibility. Accepted Golden Globe voters must adhere to a code of conduct, a conflict of interest policy, and a gift ban policy prohibiting gifts or promotional items from studios, networks, streamers, agencies, or publicists. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) is no longer part of the Golden Globes. Campaigning parties cannot contact or communicate directly with Golden Globes voters regarding Golden Globes-related nomination, award, or voting matters unless expressly authorized in writing by the Company.

The Golden Globes honor motion pictures, television, and podcast programs, and voters are expected to vote in all categories.

Academy membership is limited to film artists working in the production of theatrically-released motion pictures across 19 branches, ranging from Actors to Writers, plus the Artist Representatives category. The Academy’s membership process is by sponsorship from two Academy members of the branch to which a candidate seeks admission (with automatic consideration for Academy Award nominees), not by application. Voting on all Academy Award achievements is restricted to active and life Academy members; nominations ballots are marked and tabulated according to the preferential or reweighted range voting system, and final ballots are tabulated according to the plurality or preferential system.

Category Structure and Genre Splits: Drama vs. Musical or Comedy

There are 28 Golden Globes categories recognizing motion picture and television performances, including animated, drama, musical/comedy, and non-English language motion pictures. Golden Globes motion picture categories split Best Motion Picture into Drama and Musical or Comedy, and split lead acting into Female Actor and Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama and Musical or Comedy. Golden Globes supporting acting categories in film are not split by genre and are awarded for a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture. Motion pictures shall be entered in the Drama or Musical or Comedy category that best matches the overall intent, tone, and content of the film; a film with a serious or dramatic tone and comedic overtones is entered as a drama. A musical can be a comedy or a drama in which songs are used in addition to spoken dialogue to further the plot.

In television, besides individual performance categories, Golden Globes recognize the best series in drama, musical/comedy, and limited series/anthology/motion picture. Recently added Golden Globes categories include Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, and Best Podcast. Productions qualify for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement if they earn a gross box office receipt total of at least $150 million worldwide during the qualifying year, of which $100 million must come from the U.S. domestic box office, and/or obtain commensurate digital streaming viewership according to recognized trusted industry sources within the qualifying year. A total of eight nominees are named for the Golden Globes Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category.

Not more than five nominations shall be made for each Academy Award, except for the Best Picture award, which shall have ten nominations, and viewing of all nominated films is required to vote in each respective category in the final voting round. All active and life members of the Academy vote in the order of their preference for not more than ten motion pictures on the Best Picture nominations ballot, and final voting for the Best Picture award is restricted to active and life Academy members. Under the 99th Academy Awards rules approved on May 1, 2026, actors may be nominated for multiple performances in the same acting category if those performances place in the top five votes, and in Cinematography the preliminary voting round produces a shortlist of 20 films rather than 10-20.

Category Placement and Ballot Tabulation Rules

Nominations ballots for the four Oscar Acting categories (Actor in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role, Actress in a Leading Role, Actress in a Supporting Role) are sent to all active members of the Actors Branch, who vote in the order of their preference for not more than five acting achievements in each category. A performance by an actor or actress in any role is eligible for nomination in either the leading role or supporting role category at the Oscars, and the determination as to whether a role is leading or supporting is made individually by members of the Actors Branch at the time of balloting. Final voting for the Oscar Acting awards is restricted to active and life Academy members.

Although the submitting studio or publicist initially selects the Golden Globes award categories (such as drama vs. musical/comedy or lead vs. supporting), the Eligibility Committee and review committee may change any award entry by a written ballot vote of two-thirds or more of the committees' members voting.

Golden Globes voting is monitored by an accounting firm and conducted in two phases—Nominations and Final Vote—where nomination ballots ask each voter to rank in order of preference up to six nominees for motion picture, television, and Best Podcast categories and up to eight nominees for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. The Golden Globes nominees in each category are the six (or eight) selections that receive the greatest number of votes on the nomination ballots, while the points assigned in nomination rankings (1st choice worth six or eight points, 2nd choice worth five or seven points) are used by the accounting firm only in the event of ties. On the Golden Globes final ballot, each eligible voter votes for one nominee in each category, and in the case of a tie, the winner is the tied nominee on the final ballot that had the most votes on the nomination ballot. Film Eligibility, Qualifying Metro Markets, and the Television Boundary

Eligible motion pictures must be feature-length, scripted motion pictures of 70 minutes or longer that are both released and made available for viewing to all Golden Globes voters. For the 84th Annual Golden Globes, the motion picture qualifying year is January 1 through December 31, 2026. Motion pictures are considered released when made available for public exhibition in commercial motion picture theaters or on a recognized platform pay-per-view cable channel or pay-per-view digital delivery service (not subscription cable or digital delivery) in greater Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, or San Francisco for a minimum seven-day consecutive period beginning prior to 11:59 p.m. local time on December 31. Golden Globes motion picture qualifying releases must run in greater Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, or San Francisco for a minimum seven-day consecutive period beginning prior to 11:59 p.m. local time on December 31. Non-English Language motion pictures, and low-budget independent motion pictures (gross production budget less than $10 million USD), may be submitted for individual Best Performance categories without being submitted in Best Motion Picture.

Motion pictures should be entered in either the motion picture or the television award categories (but not both) based on their original release format; motion pictures released in theaters or on pay-per-view in the United States at the same time as or before a U.S. television airing are eligible only for motion picture awards. A qualifying Golden Globes Television Series in Drama or Musical or Comedy must be a recurring series with a total running time of at least 150 program minutes aired per season, with each qualifying episode running a minimum of twenty (20) program minutes without credits. For how the Television Academy structures episodic television rules separately from film awards, read our comparison of Emmy Awards vs. Oscars voting and eligibility.

Academy Awards of Merit are given to honor outstanding artistic and scientific achievements in theatrically released feature-length motion pictures.

An eligible Oscar feature film must be feature length (defined as over 40 minutes) and publicly exhibited by means of 35mm film, 70mm film, or Digital Cinema Package (DCP) format; Digital Cinema requirements are not satisfied by consumer, broadcast, streaming, or non-DCP file-based delivery formats. An eligible Oscar feature film must be publicly exhibited for paid admission in a commercial motion picture theater in one of six qualifying U.S. metro areas (Los Angeles County, City of New York, the Bay Area, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, or Atlanta) for a theatrical qualifying run of at least seven consecutive days in the same commercial theater with screenings at least three times daily (at least one between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. daily). Films that in any version receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any nontheatrical manner—including broadcast and cable television, Pay Per View/Video on Demand, DVD and/or streaming distribution, or episodic series—are not eligible for Academy Awards in any category. The required theatrical qualifying run must begin between January 1, 2026, and December 31, 2026. There is no entry fee for submission in the Oscars General Entry category.

Best Picture eligibility requires a confidential Representation and Inclusion Standards Entry (RAISE) form meeting two out of the four standards plus an expanded theatrical run of seven days in 10 of the top 50 U.S. markets no later than 45 days after the initial release in 2026. A film’s General Entry theatrical qualifying run counts as 1 of the 10 markets required for the Best Picture Expanded Theatrical Run (requiring 9 additional markets, with a maximum of two distinct non-U.S. territories permitted with Academy permission), and an expanded run extending beyond December 31, 2026 must be completed within 45 days or by January 22, 2027, whichever date arrives earlier.

Precursor Rules Compared: SAG Awards, Critics Choice, and BAFTA vs. Oscars

Evaluating sag awards vs oscars, critics choice vs oscars, and bafta vs oscars alongside the Golden Globes requires separating union peer ballots and critics’ associations from Academy craft branches. The Actor Awards Presented by SAG-AFTRA are given for outstanding performances in motion pictures and television programs first exhibited or broadcast during the 2026 calendar year (Jan. 1, 2026 - Dec. 31, 2026). For Actor Awards motion picture eligibility, motion pictures must be scripted, feature-length films over 60 minutes in running time first publicly exhibited in a commercial motion picture house for at least a seven (7) day consecutive run in 2026 in at least one of six major U.S. markets (Los Angeles County, City of New York, Bay Area, Chicago Area, Miami-Dade County, or Atlanta). For the 33rd Annual Actor Awards Nominating Committees (randomly sampled on May 18, 2026 from members who have not served on that committee in the past eight years), the Motion Picture Nominating Committee votes on motion picture categories and the Television Nominating Committee votes on television categories. In Actor Awards nominations voting, the five (5) performances receiving the highest number of votes in each category become the nominees, and if different performances by the same actor receive sufficient votes in the same category, only the performance receiving the highest number of votes is nominated. Final voting for the Actor Awards is restricted to active members in good standing of SAG-AFTRA who reside in the U.S. and Canada and paid their dues in full by December 10, 2026, with the performance receiving the highest number of votes on the final ballots becoming the recipient of the award.
