Treating a casting Oscar as a prize for every actor in the film puts the credit in the wrong place. For the 99th Oscars, Achievement in Casting is the award for the casting process, and Rule Nine limits eligibility to three people, and only those with an on-screen credit of Casting Director or Casting.
Achievement in Casting is the Oscar for selecting a film’s acting ensemble. Rule Nine of the 99th Academy Awards complete rules, pages 14-15, retrieved October 11, 2026, defines that work as a casting director collaborating with the film’s director and producers on the selection of the actors in the ensemble. Eligible people need an onscreen credit of “Casting Director” or “Casting,” and the rule considers no more than three individuals per film. The Academy’s rules release posted May 1, 2026 says the number of statuettes awarded will increase from a maximum of two to a maximum of three. The branch then votes a shortlist of at most ten films, and five of those films become the nominations.
- The eligible credit is “Casting Director” or “Casting.” No more than three individuals are eligible per film.
- The May 1, 2026 release sets the statuette maximum at three, increased from a maximum of two.
- The Casting Directors Branch votes a secret preferential ballot for a shortlist of at most ten films.
- After the bake-off, branch members who viewed those ten films vote for at most five. The five with the most votes are the nominations.
- This page does not name nominees, winners, or films.

Who is eligible for the casting Oscar?
The people eligible for Achievement in Casting need an onscreen credit of “Casting Director” or “Casting.” Rule Nine says no more than three individuals will be considered eligible per film. The awards list at the front of the same rules PDF names the category in one line: Casting, achievement in casting.
The May 1, 2026 release, posted for the 99th Academy Awards, says the number of statuettes awarded in the Casting category will increase from a maximum of two to a maximum of three statuettes. Eligibility and the statuette count come from two documents. The rule states who can be considered. The release states how many statuettes can be awarded. The pages we read do not say how the branch chooses three names when more than three people share that credit.
| Item | What the source states | Left unread |
|---|---|---|
| Who the award is for | The casting process: a casting director working with the director and producers to select the acting ensemble | |
| Eligible credit | Onscreen credit of “Casting Director” or “Casting” | Any other credit wording |
| Eligible people per film | No more than three | How three names are chosen from a longer credit list |
| Statuettes | A maximum of three, increased from a maximum of two | Which earlier ceremony used the maximum of two |
Takeaway: Read the credit. A long cast list is not the list of people eligible for this award.
How does the casting shortlist vote work?
The Casting Directors Branch votes the shortlist. For the preliminary voting period, the branch reviews a reminder list of all eligible films and votes to select a maximum of ten films for further consideration. The vote is a secret ballot, in order of preference. Achievements are judged within the parameters defined by the Casting Directors Branch Executive Committee. Rule Nine does not list those parameters.
Before that vote, the governors host at least one meeting open to all branch members to discuss the casting process of films eligible for consideration. Individuals who worked on a motion picture that is raised speak about their work before the branch discussion. They are absent from that conversation, so other branch members can speak about the film. The rule gives no date for the meeting.
Public dates for the 99th shortlist announcement are on how Oscar shortlists work.
What does the casting bake-off include?
The Casting Directors Branch holds a Bake-Off nominating event hosted by the branch governors. The event is open to branch members and all eligible Academy voters, in person or online. It aims to describe the casting process for each shortlisted film and the contribution of each casting director. A question session with the films’ casting directors is part of the event. Only the designated potential nominees address questions.
The May 1, 2026 release schedules Casting, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound, and Visual Effects voting events, called bake-offs, for January 8-10, 2027. The release does not assign Casting to a single day inside that window.
The casting directors of each shortlisted film collaborate with their producers, their distributors, or both, to give the Academy a reel of excerpts that show the film’s casting achievements. All reels must meet the requirements below, or else the reel may not be shown.
| Reel rule | Requirement in Rule Nine |
|---|---|
| Source | Excerpts from the final release version of the film |
| Length | Not to exceed five minutes in total running time |
| Picture and sound | Presented exactly as they appeared in the final release version, and focused on the casting achievements under consideration |
| Joins | Each excerpt starts and finishes with no editorial or sound blend between excerpts |
| Captions on the reel | Closed captioning is required |
Producers or distributors grant the Academy the right to use the excerpts for voting, and for nonprofit purposes of the Academy Museum, the Academy Foundation, or Academy websites. The reels become the property of the Academy and go into the Academy Film Archive. The rule says the Academy will not use the excerpts for commercial gain.
Active voting members of the Casting Directors Branch are eligible to view the excerpts of the ten films at the Bake-Off, on the Academy Screening Room, or both.

How are the five nominations chosen?
After the Bake-Off, eligible members of the Casting Directors Branch vote for not more than five motion pictures, in the order of their preference, from the ten films under consideration. Viewing the ten films is required for that vote. The five motion pictures receiving the highest number of votes become the nominations for final voting for the Casting award.
Once those five nominees are announced, an edited video of the Bake-Off, focused on the work of the nominees, and a photo grid of the cast, the full cast list, or both, go online for all eligible Academy voters.
Final voting for the Casting award is restricted to active and life Academy members. It follows the Academy’s voting procedures for all award categories. Rule Nine does not restate a final-round ballot size for Casting.
| Step | Who takes part | Result in the pages we read | Left unread |
|---|---|---|---|
| Branch meeting | Governors, all branch members, and people who worked on a film that is raised | Those people speak, then leave, before the preliminary vote | The meeting date |
| Shortlist | Casting Directors Branch | A maximum of ten films, by secret ballot, in order of preference | The public announcement date |
| Bake-off | Branch governors host it. It is open to branch members and all eligible Academy voters, in person or online | A process description and a question session. Only designated potential nominees address questions | Which day inside January 8-10, 2027 |
| Nominations ballot | Eligible Casting Directors Branch members who viewed the ten films | Up to five films, in order of preference. The five with the highest number of votes are the nominations | |
| After the nominations | Eligible Academy voters, online | An edited Bake-Off video of the nominees’ work, plus a photo grid of the cast, the full cast list, or both | |
| Final vote | Active and life Academy members | The procedures used for all award categories | A casting-specific final ballot count |

Blank envelopes on an empty seat. The nomination step is a preference vote among ten films, and these envelopes do not show a result.
Takeaway: A shortlist of ten films is not the nominee list. The nominations are the five films with the highest votes after the bake-off.
How does the casting Oscar differ from an acting Oscar?
Achievement in Casting and the acting awards are separate lines in the 99th materials. Rule Nine defines casting as the selection of the ensemble. The May 1, 2026 release states two acting changes in the same list as the casting statuette change. Actors can be nominated for multiple performances in the same category when those performances place in the top five votes. In the acting category, only roles credited in the film’s legal billing, and demonstrably performed by humans with their consent, are eligible.
| Question | Casting | Acting, in the May 1, 2026 release |
|---|---|---|
| What is honored | The process of selecting the acting ensemble | A role in the film’s legal billing, demonstrably performed by a human with that person’s consent |
| Count in the lines we read | No more than three individuals eligible per film. Statuettes: a maximum of three, increased from a maximum of two | Multiple performances in the same category can be nominated when they place in the top five votes |
| Vote in the lines we read | The Casting Directors Branch votes the shortlist and the five nominations. Final voting is for active and life members, under the procedures for all categories |
When the credit line does not settle the award
The credit line is the eligibility test in Rule Nine. It does not name a winner. Questions of eligibility and rules for this award are resolved by the Casting Directors Branch Executive Committee, subject to the approval of the Board of Governors.
A feature film needs a qualifying theatrical release between January 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026 for Academy Awards consideration. That sentence is the general feature rule in the May 1, 2026 release. Rule Nine applies its voting steps to eligible films and does not repeat those theatrical dates.
These lines are the 99th rule and the May 1, 2026 release, both read from the October 11, 2026 capture. A later rules book replaces them. This page does not name nominees, winners, or films. Predicting winners is a separate task, in how precursor awards lined up with Oscar winners. A ballot comes after the five nominations exist, which is what the Oscar pool sheet is for.

Method and sources
This page was compiled on October 14, 2026 from two Academy documents captured on October 11, 2026. Rule Nine, Special Rules for the Casting Award, is pages 14-15 of the 99th Academy Awards complete rules PDF. The category name, achievement in casting, is in the awards list at the front of that PDF. The statuette change, the two acting lines, the theatrical window, and the January 8-10, 2027 bake-off window are from the Academy press office release posted May 1, 2026. The tables paraphrase those sections. The PDF text is not reprinted. Nomination lists, winners, and film titles are absent from the sections used here, so they stay off the page. The photographs show a table with closed folders, a tin beside a folder, and blank envelopes on an empty seat. Search volume was not measured.
