Assuming a network’s fall shows all start the same week sends viewers to the wrong night and costs them premieres. NBC’s 2026 fall launches, for example, run from a September 9 football kickoff to a November 2 comedy return; the fall TV schedule is the night-by-night lineup a broadcast network unveils at its spring upfront and rolls out from September, inside a broadcast season that Nielsen said officially began on September 22 in 2025.

A fall TV schedule is a broadcast network’s prime-time lineup for the new season. Using NBC’s 2026-27 season as the example: the network unveiled the schedule and its new series at its upfront on May 11, 2026, announced premiere dates on June 24, scheduled launches from September 9 to November 2, and held two new series for January and February 2027. The broadcast season then runs into late spring; Nielsen’s report on the 2025-26 season’s last month said broadcast dramas and sitcoms fell as the season concluded. Other networks follow their own timetables, so each network’s announcement is the source to follow.

This page explains the yearly cycle with NBC’s published 2026-27 schedule as the worked example. It covers broadcast networks; cable and streaming services set their own release calendars.

Key points:

  • The upfront is where a network presents its new season; NBC’s was on May 11, 2026.
  • Premiere dates come later; NBC announced its dates on June 24, 2026.
  • Launches are staggered; NBC’s 2026 dates span about eight weeks.
  • Some new shows wait for January or February.
  • Awards telecasts and sports sit inside the same grid.

What is the fall TV schedule?

The fall TV schedule is the night-by-night grid of prime-time shows a broadcast network sets for the start of its new season. It answers two questions for viewers: which shows air on which night and hour, and when each one premieres. The grid is published months before the first episode, and the network keeps adjusting it as the season goes on.

The schedule sits inside the broadcast season, the ratings year the industry measures. Nielsen, which provides TV ratings, said in a September 2, 2025 announcement that its weekly rankings “will start with the official beginning of the Broadcast season on September 22.” At the other end, Nielsen’s Gauge report for the 2025-26 season’s final month (published July 28, 2026) said broadcast dramas fell 13% and sitcoms 10% from the previous month as they “were impacted by the conclusion of the broadcast season in the final weeks of the month.”

Term What it means Where to find it
Broadcast season The ratings year, from late September into late spring Nielsen announcements
Upfront A network’s presentation of its coming season to advertisers The network’s upfront announcement
Fall schedule A network’s nightly grid for the start of the season The network’s schedule and premiere-date releases
Premiere date The first airing of a new season or series The network’s premiere-date release
Midseason Shows launched or returning from about January The network’s schedule release and midseason announcement

Sources: Nielsen, September 2, 2025 and July 28, 2026; NBCUniversal and NBC Insider, 2026.

The TV season is also not the Emmy year. The Television Academy’s 2026 Emmys covered programs that premiered from June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026, which is why a September premiere waits nearly a year for its first Emmy nomination round.

Takeaway: Treat the fall schedule as a network’s plan for late September onward, and check that network’s own release for the details.

How is the fall schedule decided? From upfront to premiere dates

For NBC’s 2026-27 season the sequence ran in three published steps: new series and a lineup unveiled at the May 11 upfront, premiere dates announced on June 24, and launches from September 9. A pilot, the first episode made to test an idea, comes before all of this; NBC’s May 11 release credits some directors as executive producers of the pilot only, which shows those episodes were made before the series were picked up.

Step Date (NBC, 2026) What happened Source
Upfront May 11 NBCUniversal presented its season at Radio City Music Hall; NBC unveiled its 2026-27 schedule and four new series NBCUniversal, upfront announcement and May 11 release
Premiere dates June 24 NBC announced fall premiere dates from September 9 to November 2 NBCUniversal, June 24 release
Fall launch September 9 onward Football first, entertainment from September 17 NBCUniversal, June 24 release
Midseason January and February 2027 The Rockford Files and Sunset P.I. scheduled to launch NBCUniversal, May 11 and June 24 releases
NBC's 2026-27 broadcast year: upfront on May 11, premiere dates announced June 24, fall launches September 9 to November 2, specials November 26 and December 10, midseason launches in January and February, season ends in late spring
One broadcast year, using NBC's 2026-27 dates. Compiled from NBCUniversal and Nielsen.

The upfront is the advertising side of the schedule. NBCUniversal’s own announcement of its 2026 upfront describes it as a showcase of upcoming content and ad products for brands, and says that for the 2026-27 upfront season it also represents the Versant cable networks such as CNBC, E!, USA and SYFY to advertisers. That is why the lineup is public in the spring even though most episodes air months later.

Common mistake: Treating the upfront lineup as final dates. NBC’s lineup came out on May 11, but its premiere dates followed on June 24.

Takeaway: Read the upfront release for the shape of the season and the premiere-date release for actual dates.

When does the fall TV season start?

The fall TV season starts in late September, but individual shows premiere over several weeks. Nielsen marked September 22, 2025 as the official start of the 2025-26 broadcast season. NBC’s announced 2026 dates show how wide one network’s spread can be:

Date (2026) NBC premiere, as announced Note

Sunday, September 13 First Sunday Night Football telecast Weekly from here
Monday, September 14 78th Emmy Awards telecast NBC set its entertainment season to begin three days later

The same release shows what fills the gaps: sports take whole nights, the summer competition series runs until its September 23 finale, and the Emmy telecast takes a Monday. Big live events are part of the network calendar in the same way; the Oscars, for example, are scheduled for March 14, 2027 on ABC, as our Oscar night guide notes, and more of the awards calendar is in our awards-season explainers.

Takeaway: Look up each show’s own premiere date; on NBC’s 2026 schedule, “fall premieres” stretch into November.

Fall, midseason and summer: how the windows compare

NBC’s 2026-27 releases show three programming windows: fall launches from September, midseason launches from January, and summer programming that runs into September. The season’s end in late spring sits between midseason and summer.

Window When Role in NBC’s 2026-27 plan Example
Fall September to December Launch the main lineup, new and returning Line of Fire premieres September 21; OneChicago returns October 7
Midseason From January Launch shows held back from fall; run second cycles The Rockford Files (January 2027) and Sunset P.I. (February 2027); in 2026, The Voice returned on February 23
End of season Late spring Finales; Nielsen reported broadcast dramas and sitcoms down from the previous month as the 2025-26 season concluded Nielsen Gauge, published July 28, 2026
Summer Into September Summer series run until the fall launch America’s Got Talent, finale September 23, 2026

Sources: NBCUniversal, May 11 and June 24, 2026; NBC Insider; Nielsen, July 28, 2026.

Programming windows of the broadcast year, with NBC examples.

Midseason is a second launch window, not a leftover slot. NBC announced The Rockford Files and Sunset P.I. on May 11, 2026 together with its fall series, and placed them in January and February. In the 2025-26 season, The Voice ran a spring cycle from February 23, 2026, and its 30th season returns in the fall, which is the pattern of a show with two cycles a year.

Takeaway: Check January and February announcements for new shows that are missing from the fall grid.

Why does the fall lineup keep changing during the season?

A fall lineup keeps changing because the season itself has planned rotations: sports take nights, some returns start later, specials take slots and new shows wait for midseason. NBC’s 2026-27 announcements show each of these; networks can also revise a schedule after announcing it, so the latest release is the one to trust.

Planned change NBC 2026-27 example Source
Live sports take nights Sunday Night Football from September; multiple nights of NBA regular-season games from October NBCUniversal, May 11
Later starts within the fall The Monday comedy block returns November 2 NBCUniversal, June 24
One-night specials Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 26; a three-hour 100th-anniversary special on Thursday, December 10 NBCUniversal, June 24
Midseason launches The Rockford Files in January, Sunset P.I. in February NBCUniversal, May 11 and June 24
Two cycles a year The Voice: spring cycle from February 23, 2026; season 30 from September 21, 2026 NBC Insider
Five planned reasons a fall TV lineup changes during the season: live sports, new shows held for January and February, later starts in the fall, one-night specials, two cycles a year
Why the grid moves during the season. Examples from NBC's 2026-27 announcements.

Common mistake: Reading a show’s absence from the fall grid as a cancellation. Check the network’s midseason plans first; NBC’s 2026-27 schedule holds two new series for January and February.

Takeaway: When a show disappears from its night, check the sports calendar, the specials and the midseason plans before assuming the worst.

How to follow the fall schedule as a viewer

The reliable way to follow the fall schedule is to work from each network’s own releases, in the order they appear. Five checks cover most surprises.

Check When (NBC 2026 example) What to look for
1. Upfront release May 11 New series, returning series and midseason holds
2. Premiere-date release June 24 The exact first-episode date and time for each show
3. Sports and specials September onward Nights taken by football or basketball, and one-night specials
4. How you will watch Each premiere NBC lists its shows as streaming the next day on Peacock; antenna viewing needs a TV tuner
5. Midseason announcement Before January Shows launching or returning in January and February

For check 4, not every screen can receive over-the-air TV; our comparison of commercial and consumer TVs shows how to confirm a tuner on the spec sheet. For our other TV explainers, see the TV section.

Takeaway: Follow the network’s own releases in order: upfront, dates, sports and specials, viewing options, midseason.

When this does not apply

This page describes the broadcast network cycle, using NBC’s 2026-27 announcements and Nielsen’s season markers as evidence. It does not describe cable networks or streaming services, which set their own release dates, or TV outside the U.S. Other networks publish their own lineups and dates on their own timetables, and every date here belongs to the 2025-26 or 2026-27 season. Schedules from earlier years are records of their year, not guides to the current one.

This site is independent and is not connected to any network (about this site). For other guides, see the full article index.

Takeaway: For any other network or year, take the dates from that network’s own announcements.

Method and sources

We compiled this page on October 7, 2026 from Nielsen’s September 2, 2025 announcement and its Gauge report on the final month of the 2025-26 season (published July 28, 2026), NBCUniversal’s upfront announcement and its May 11 and June 24, 2026 schedule releases, and NBC Insider’s fall 2026 and midseason 2026 pages. The Emmy eligibility year comes from the Television Academy’s 2025-26 rules. NBC is the example because its full sequence of announcements was available from the network itself; the dates describe NBC’s plan as announced, not confirmed airings.
